Davis & Marron - Flamenco Fantasia

Marcus Davis is somewhat an enigma. He has no experience within the Flamenco genre. Evidently this song is inspired by just such a woman he saw while waiting in line to buy a ticket for a concert. It became a true obsession with him, as he wrote the lyric on the back of a scrap of paper during intermission of the concert. He is active in the classical music community, and has worked for various orchestras as a music librarian.

As Flamenco is for the most part an oral tradition, he had to find someone familiar with the art to help him realize the music for the song. Through connections he has with people in the field, he found Juan Marron, a master of the Flamenco guitar style. Their collaboration melded the words together with a beautiful guitar solo. While not exactly a piece of Flamenco music per se, it does capture the spirit and excitement of Flamenco!

I saw her, majestic and fair,
with crimson lips, blackest of hair,
and fairest of skin.

She was waiting in line just ahead of me,
and I thought of the flamenco guitars
and dancers of Spain.
I do not know what nationality she was,
but she had the look of a Spanish dancer!
She was gone by the time I got to the head of the line,
but her form, her beauty, her statuesque
presence is forever within me!

The beat of the guitar pounding,
makes me think of the blessed feet,
with the strings ever resounding,
I feel the stomping out of the beat.

Who were you, magnificent one?
I will never ever see you again!
But until the the days of my setting sun,
I shall see you, and hear you, again!

So strange to be so taken,
with a stranger to behold.
What a strong impression she made,
 to make my imagination unfold!

You will dance for me forever in my head!
 And the resounding flamenco
will ever strum so rhythmically,
until my mind ceases to go!

Ah, bailaora flamenca,
dancing beautiful and free
bailaora flamenca,
you will always dance for me!
