Amos Carter - Bass Fiddle Boogie

The latest by Amos Carter Bass Fiddle Boogie was written by his band member Stu Milligan and his mother Mams Carter. The song is about Amos' younger days, and was partly written in response to a song done by Amos about Stu Milligan, Slew Foot Stu Boogie and was prompted by Amos' mother to give the band another original song to sing at gigs.

As Amos proclaims at the beginning of the recording, his mother plays the piano and adds her consid- erable boogie- woogie playing talents to the rest of the band.  This is the first song she has co-written for the band, as she's been concentrating on her solo career, Amos' instrument is indeed the double bass, or bass fiddle. He anchors the bass in most of the group's songs and is a formidable player. He usually doesn't spotlight his playing very often, but it can be heard throughout the song and he has two places where  the spotlight is on him and his slap-bass technique. He's played countless hours over the years, and has the calluses on both hands to prove it. Double bass strings are thick and under heavy tension, so the left hand develops calluses to protect the finger from blistering. The right hand also develops blisters, in Amos' case even thicker ones from playing slap bass so often. The instrument requires arm and finger strength to play, and it is for good reason that many double bass players are large, strong people. But there are exceptions. Symphony orchestras can have rather physically unimposing people in the double bass section, but for sure, all have strong hands and fingers that are callused.

Amos has mentioned when he was in High School and learning to play. He said the hardest part was restricting the time he practiced so his fingers would slowly develop calluses instead of blisters. He said it was a lesson learned the hard way. As it goes in youth, he thought he was immune to injury, and practiced way longer than he should have. When the inevitable blisters formed, along with very sore hands that cramped painfully, he had to quit practicing until everything healed. He was so intent on learning the instrument that his mother told us that one night after Amos was in bed she took the instrument next door to a neighbor to keep it out of his sight!

Back in school on the very first day,
Picking out an instrument to play.
The girls took flutes, the boys took brass,
Amos Carter gave them both a pass.
Looked in the corner at the big wood,
Said, "I’ll take the big one, if I could!"

He plays that boogie all night long!
A thumping rhythm big and strong!
Slapping strings till the floorboards shake,
A monster racket Amos makes!

Bus driver started to frown and cuss,
Said, “You hog up my whole dang bus!"
Bought two tickets, got red in the face,
One seat for him, one for the bass!
Big bass fiddle stood in the aisle,
The boys and girls would always smile.

He plays that boogie all night long!
A thumping rhythm big and strong!
Slapping strings till the floorboards shake,
A monster racket Amos makes!

Friday night at the halftime show,
Wind came up and began to blow.
Brass section stepped so clean and fine,
Amos dragged his bass on the line!
Carrying twenty-five pounds of wood,
Keeping that beat like a big man should.
Marched in the mud with his big frame,
Star attraction at the football game!

He grew up big, he grew up tall,
He’s the king of the rhythm hall.
Playing tunes on Big and Tall tracks,
With driving piano, jumping sax!
No more marching the football floor,
Just Amos knocking down the door!

He plays that boogie all night long!
A thumping rhythm big and strong!
Slapping strings till the floorboards shake,
A monster racket Amos makes!
Yeah, two seats on the bus!
Big Amos and his bass fiddle!

Amos Carter - Boogie-Woogie Santa Claus

Amos Carter is the first one of our artists to submit a Christmas holiday themed song, and we find out Santa wears Airpods as he does his work leaving gifts, and boogies to the beat he's hearing in his Airpods as he goes.  This is a big production for Carter, who usually plays with only his double bass, a guitar or two, and a piano. Boogie-Woogie Santa Claus was tried out in Amos' gigs, and the audience gave it a lot of applause. Amos does this with most of his songs, and this practice has given him some good songs to record, such as Slew Foot Stu Boogie

Carter had some problems a while back getting a piano player that fit in with his small group. He kept pestering his mother, a talented pianist, to join the band. Mams Carter is a recording artist in her own right, as she's recorded for Big And Tall Records before, with The Blues Done Got Me So Bad as a good example. Mams doesn't like playing gigs all that much, but she usually plays when the group records, as she does in this recording.

We put out some feelers with our other artists, and there will most likely be more Christmas themes recording coming soon, as the season is upon us!

(Boogie woogie Santa
Boogie woogie Santa)

One Christmas Eve I stayed awake
To catch that jolly ol' elf
As he slid down the chimney
To fill stockings hung on the shelf

I was fightin' sleep really bad
When out the corner of my eye
A big fat guy in a red suit!
Santa Claus! It's true! Ain't no lie!
He had Airpods in his ears..

He was too fat for the chimney
Don't know how he got in the house
The way he was movin' his feet
Weren't tip toeing like a mouse!

Was boogying to the tree
Wigglin' and shakin' his ass
The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus
Was havin' himself a gas!

(Boogie woogie Santa
Boogie woogie Santa)

He got in his big gunny sack
Laid bunch of gifts under the tree
The he saw the treats and the milk
Sprawled on the couch ate the cookies

He was enjoyin' his work
Laid on the couch for a while
Then he jumped up with a start
Wasn't gonna cramp his style

Boogying next to the tree
Dancin' like he weren't a senior
The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus
Usin' a broom as a partner

(Boogie woogie Santa
Boogie woogie Santa)

Kept watchin' through the banister
He boogied his way with the broom
Jivin' and shuckin' with his feet
He made his way across the room

Then he got close to the door
Jiggled his big butt for a while
Then looked me straight in the eye
And disappeared with a smile!

Visions of Santa in my head
I sat up in bed full awake!
The Boogie Woogie Santa Claus
All a dream for heaven's sake!

(Boogie woogie Santa
Boogie woogie Santa)

As we all opened our gifts
On the frosty Christmas morn
I told the gang about my dream
What they said made me forlorn

But what could I say to all that
Already knew it wasn't true
And that fact was kind a sad
It made me feel a little blue

Then I came to a gift for me
Among Christmas paper wads
Tag said it was from Santa...
It was a pair of Airpods!

Amos Carter w Mama Carter On Piano - Ain't Nothin' Gonna Go On! Cover

As told in the post about Forgotten Bob's original version of his song Ain't Nothin' Gonna Go On, the song chord sheet and lyrics were sent to other Big And Tall Records artists to see if anyone would like to make their own version in their given styles. One of those takers was Amos Carter who offers up his Boogie Woogie version of the song. Amos has his mother sit in on the recording on piano. Rumor has it that Mama Carter is coming out with a song of her own soon!

There's also a Blues version of the song done by Hambone Riley that is a marked departure in style for Hambone, more of a R&B style with a full brass section backing him up!

Got support socks on, ain’t no lie
Just ‘nough asprin to get me by
Got all kinds a aches and pains
Think I gotta an ankle sprain

Ask to boogie, ain’t gonna fly
Do I have to tell ya the reason why
I got the old man fidgets
All the way down to my digits

Look out pretty Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Said lookout cute Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Gotta pain in my back and it’s
Kept me all awake until dawn

Ain't no wonder why I got the ills
I forgot to take all my pills
Someone said the first thing to go
Don't have a clue what it was though

Got a bad case of the heart burn
Eat the wrong stuff won't ever learn
Got the urge but it's just all talk
Got nothin' left to walk the walk

Look out pretty Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Said lookout cute Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Gotta bad case of the trots
I just feel so put upon

I know it's only ten o'clock
But I'm all wore out, really shot
Could do it all night, never quit
Now it takes all night to do it!

Snack all night and watch some TV
Catch old movies, just you and me
Now I just lost all of my class
All it does is give me bad gas!

Look out pretty Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Said lookout cute Mama
Ain't nothin’ gonna go on
Ya know that I love ya babe
But ain't nothin' gonna go on

Look out pretty Mama
Wish somethin' was gonna go on
Said lookout cute Mama
Wish somethin' was gonna go on
Ya know that I love ya babe
But there ain't nothin' gonna go on

Amos Carter - Would A Should A Boogie - with Mama Carter

After finding out about Amos Carter's Mother, it's no wonder he's got a Boogie Woogie band! She plays piano and adds vocals to this latest song of her sons. Amos told us she used to be a substitute piano player at the small church they went to when they were kids. He said she could be serious for an hour or so once in a while, but she would break out into Boogie Woogie piano on occasion, sometimes in church as well! Parishioners liked it, but the old conservative preacher didn't! She still plays the piano, an old upright they've had at the family house as long as Amos can remember. She plays all kinds of music, but loves to improvise all kinds as well.

The lyrics of the song ring true enough; Mama Carter used to sit down and play the piano as she lectured the kids (all 9 of them!), and if there was too much griping, she would  play hymns they knew that they could sing along with, or 'old people' music as the kids used to call big band music. Since Amos started his band, he's been trying to get his Mama to come up on stage and play a song or two with them, but she always refused. Then Amos wrote this one, and she thought it was so good that she finally agreed, after they rehearsed it a lot. She plays very well, and her voice isn't bad either!

They recorded the song at Delmar Gentry's studio in Flagstaff, and Delmar was taken aback by Mama Carter! He had no idea she was such a fine piano player and singer, and is trying to  talk her into doing some solo recordings.

Mama and Dad had a slug of kids
Dad worked the oil fields, gone a lot
Up to Mama to civilize
Her own style she always brought

Each of us had our chores to do
But kids are known to forget
So she would handle it her way
She never gave an idle threat

She'd sit at the old piano
Limber up her fingers to swing
And twiddle the keys,
easy as ya please
And this is what she would sing:

Would a Should a but you ain't!
Didn't do what yer supposed to!
Ya know what's comin'
Don't tell me dumbin'
Punish you when I'm all through

The Would a should a boogie
(The Would a should a boogie)
Is gonna surround and get you!
You cain't escape it,
Don't lie and fake it
Or you'll get what's comin' to you!

Now you'd know you was in the soup
She seldom got very cross
While she never raised her hand
Had ways to get her point across

Have to listen to her lecture
Not say wait 'til your Dad gets home
She'd nag 'til your ears would turn red
She had ways that were all her own

When she sat at the piano
A smile crossed Mama's face
Pound the ivories,
She'd make up stories
And try to put us in our place:

Would A Should a, you didn't!
Excuses I've heard before
So don't be dissin'
Hush up and listen
While I tell ya what's in store

The Would a should a boogie
Won't treat you like yer vermin
But first it's my whim
To sing some church hymns
Before I go on with my sermon!

AN HOUR OR TWO OF CHURCH HYMS! A
TORTURE! PLEASE, MAMA! BEAT MY ASS INSTEAD!

[Male and female duet]
The Would a should a boogie
(The Would a should a boogie)
Is gonna surround and get you!
You cain't run and escape it,
Don't try and lie to fake it
Or you'll get what's comin' to you

Amos Carter - The Good Old Days?

Amos Carter's latest is actually a reworking of a Tugboat Jackson song Good Ol' Days. Carter talked to Tugboat, told him the changes he wanted to make, and Tugboat  told him that he had changed so much of the song that it was okay to take credit for it himself. Amos opted to change the title to help differentiate between the two songs, added the question mark to convey the theme of the song. Amos puts a whole different spin on the music as well, as he adds a boogie woogie beat to it, speeds it up considerably as well. The song also uses a larger ensemble than his usual small combo. Some good solo work, and of course Amos lays down a solid bass with his slap bass playing of the bass fiddle.

I hear a lot of people my age
People in their senior years
Talk about The Good Ol' Days
They wish to turn back the years

The Good Ol' days are now
No matter how bad it seems
To want to go back many years
Is just a convoluted dream

One thing I know for sure
Memory can be a fickle thing
What I thought was so good
Was really not a good thing

It's hard to 'member all of that
Back to when you wasn't so fat
When food and beer tasted better
Before your taste buds gone flat!

The Good Ol' days are now
No matter how bad it seems
To want to go back many years
Is just a convoluted dream

Humans are a sentimental lot
There's bound to be talk of the past
It can be fun to reminisce 'bout years ago
Before so many you know had past

The Good Ol' days are now
No matter how bad it seems
To want to go back many years
Is just a convoluted dream

Amos Carter - Boogie Woogie Hoedown

Amos Carter
is back with his Boogie-Woogie band with a song that was co-written with Delmar Gentry, Boogie Woogie Hoedown. This departs from Amos' usual style in that the song is in a minor key, a little odd for a song about a successful night's performance by the band.  Amos and his drummer Kelly Greenway wrote the lyrics, while Delmar wrote the music. Delmar recorded the song as his studio and sent the file along to us with a little info about the recording and the song:

It took us a while to get the song finished, as Amos wasn't too pleased with the music being in a minor key. Actually, was quite against it. We tried other tunes, other arrangements, but came up with nothing. Amos only had the piano, drums, and guitar along with his double bass available for the recording. That didn't do much for his disposition as well. But the more we worked, the more he warmed up to the idea of the music. I told him the first thing I thought of when I read the lyric was that he wasn't really enthused about playing for what was obviously a country music crowd. Hence the tune came to me in a minor key. So there's a different feel to it, and he finally agreed. The smaller ensemble really helped bring the song home as well. I'm telling you, just those four guys could really get going!
So we'll see how Amos' fans react. Like the lyrics say, boogie woogie is a cousin to country, blues, all kinds of other genres.

We got a request for a gig
Some corn pone folks in a barn
I tell 'em we don't play country
Gotta be honest and forewarn

We don't play pop, no metal rock
Don't play rap or hip hop no way!
Don't play techno, don't know how
Boogie woogie, that's what we play!

So a dude tells us...

Play a boogie woogie hoedown
With folks drinkin' beer have no fear
Hit the beat, make it real low down
The booze will deaden their ears!

Me and the band think it over
We end up sayin' what the hell!
Tried to tell 'em, they don't much care
We practiced and it went well

The band asked me what did I say?
Boogie woogie is cousins with 'em all
Country and blues and rock 'n roll
We can play them in a barn or hall!

So we told em'...

We'll play a boogie woogie hoedown
With folks drinkin' beer have no fear
We'll hit the beat, make it low down
Hope the booze will numb their ears!

So we played that night in a barn
That was full of many a folk
When we laid down the boogie beat
They all come alive and awoke

The boards on the floor of the barn
Creaked and groaned from all of the feet
Kept things movin' all through the night
With their stompin' out of the beat

Want us back again to...

Play a boogie woogie hoedown
They all had a real good time
Paid us well, and a big ol' tip
Joint ended up really prime!

Boogie woogie hoedown
Gonna get so low down
Take all of 'em downtown
And it all starts at sundown!

My name is Amos, and by golly
I just might be famous!

Amos Carter - Rubber Neckers

The latest from Amos Carter and his crew, a simple little song about rubber neckers. You know, thepeople who insist on holding up traffic of one kind or another to gawk at an accident or something else. Admittedly they can be not only annoying, but a danger in themselves. But as Amos warns us all in the song, we all got rubber necker behavior in us. Be aware! Don't become one yourself!

Yeah yer bound to see 'em out on the road
In a car, or a truck haulin' grain
Whatever you see out on the street
Could have one drivin', what a pain!

Somethin' out of the corner their eye
Derails their attention on the road
Could be a gopher, could be a wreck
Hitch hiker or a busted commode

The rubber neckers, traffic breakers!
What the hell is so dang important?
It's a risky behavior on the road
Get some better safety deportment!

Other day a man riding' a bike
Wearin' speedos, lights on his spokes
In front of me, shakin' and weavin'
I thought he was havin' a stroke!

He was rubber neckin' like crazy
Thought was gonna untwist his fool head
It's contagious, you'll do it too
You'll turn into a danger instead!

The rubber neckers, traffic breakers!
What the hell is so dang important?
It's a risky behavior on the road
Get some better safety deportment!

It's true, I know from experience
Human beings nosey by nature
There's a rubber necker inside you
Were made that way by the creator

But ya gotta learn to stifle it
Rubber neckin' can be a habit
Look at anything but what ya should
Whether it's a shoe or a rabbit!

 The rubber neckers, traffic breakers!
What the hell is so dang important?
It's a risky behavior on the road
Get some better safety deportment!

It's true, I know from experience
Human beings nosey by nature
There's a rubber necker inside you
Were made that way by the creator

But ya gotta learn to stifle it
Rubber neckin' can be a habit
Look at anything but what ya should
Whether it's a shoe or a rabbit!

The rubber neckers, traffic breakers!
What the hell is so dang important?
It's a risky behavior on the road
Get some better safety deportment!

 Rubber neckers! Traffic breakers!
Don't become one yerself!

Amos Carter - Charlie Horse

Charlie
We at Big And Tall Records have released some recordings with subjects out of the usual. A band whose hero is a cartoon character, a song about the hazards of eating hot peppers, and a song about atomic farts! Those are just examples, our catalogue has many others. So it isn't really strange that one of our artists would write a song about a goofy horse. Amos Carter's song Charlie Horse is pretty much fact, and he told us, like the examples we gave, he gave but a few of the horse's foibles as examples.

Amos Carter came upon the recording studio at the urging of his ranch boss, Delmar Gentry, who also produces all of his songs to date. Amos has a small Boogie Woogie band that plays locally in the Flagstaff area bars and grills, usually on Saturday night. The band wanted to start doing more of their original songs, so Delmar also helped them get started with that.

One of our associates in the office is a horse man as well, and he attests to how each horse has their own character and personality, and that sometimes they can be really goofy and fun! So hats off to Charlie Horse and all of his quirks, known and unknown!

I've got a horse of my own at the barn
Got him a few years back for a song
Guy that had him sold him really cheap
Told me he was goofy, something really wrong

I bought him anyway and I'm glad I did
He's a laid back guy, kind of funny
End up givin' him the name Charlie
To me, he's worth a lot more money

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

Charlie's good on a trail ride, yes he is
Unless you come across things he hates
One of them things is a puddle
He stands in front of it just waits

You gotta get off and lead him round it
He won't step through it all alone
He's stubborn as a mule about it
Best get off and gently lead him on

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

In hot weather, we hose the horses down
Charlie especially likes the spray
But if you don't let him drink out the hose
He gets grumpy, grumbles, walks away!

If he happens to see an orange peel
He'll act like it's a wolf about to pounce!
He neighs, nickers, raise all holy hell
Take a leap, and down he'll trounce

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

End of the day, he likes a rubdown
From his head down to his rear parts
Ya gotta be careful when ya get there
Cuz the rubdown rubs out all his farts!

He always pays such close attention
But he looks like a blockhead moon calf
With his silly looking horse expression
He lets out a big horse laugh

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

The big crazy fool cracks me up!
I love him so much, he's off the shelf
And the reason that I do...
Is that he reminds me so much of myself!

Amos Carter - Slew Foot Stu Boogie

Amos Carter's latest tells the tale about one of his band members; Stu Milligan, rhythm guitar player. At least a certain part of Stu's anatomy, mainly his slew feet. Now being slew footed means your toes point out towards the side, the opposite of pigeon toes where the toes point inwards. Stu's had the nickname Slew Foot for a long time, since he was in the Army. He takes it with good humor, and even contributed to the writing of this song, Slew Foot Stu's Boogie. Amos told us Stu came up with the chorus for  the song.

The song was recorded at Delmar Gentry's studio in Flagstaff, and Delmar produced it as well as filled in on piano for their regular piano player who couldn't make the session. Amos and his band keep adding to their original songs they can play at their gigs, as well as doing numerous covers. Amos handles the double bass and lays down a solid bass to the song as usual. Amos' band has played quite a few gigs in the Flagstaff area this past winter. Amos still works at the horse ranch since Delmar bought it, but it's not a full-time horse barn like it was before, with horses being bought, sold, and bred. So he's got a lot more time on his hands to devote to the band.

Delmar continues to support three people from his horse ranch that have made recordings. Doyle Harseth, the former owner of the ranch has more recordings in the works, Amos is always working on a new song, with Marie Flores being occupied with her mother temporarily living with her on the ranch with no foreseeable plans to record, although Delmar has said that he's working on some ideas for her when she's free.

We've got a member of the band
Who walks in his own special style
Toes stickin' out past his ankles
His feet flomp and stomp down the aisle

His toes always catching on things
We all call him bunches of names
Feet like two extended wings
He was born that way, not to blame

Slew foot Stu, struttin' down the hall
Like a duck, with turned out feet
Like Chaplin in a silent flick
All with a boogie woogie beat

He plays the rhythm guitar well
Keeps a real steady boogie beat
Nothin' throws him off you can bet
Just glad he don't play with his feet!

 Imagine his hands stickin' out
Like a couple two by four boards
He'd have hell of a time strummin'
And couldn't finger no dang chords!

Slew foot Stu, struttin' down the hall
Like a duck, with turned out feet
Like Chaplin in a silent flick
All with a boogie woogie beat

When Stu went into the army
He was issued boots normal size
He made his platoon sargent mad
Kept wearin' out the boot sole sides!

Sargent hollered at him always
He'd yell at him when marchin' "HALT!
Point your damn feet straight!" he'd tell him
Stu would mutter 'It ain't my fault!"

Slew foot Stu, struttin' down the hall
Like a duck, with turned out feet
Like Chaplin in a silent flick
All with a boogie woogie beat

All the ribbin' is in good fun
Great that Stu's got a real thick hide
Glad that he laughs, doesn't get mad
He takes it all well in his stride

But he gets even with some us
Givin' his own kind of abuse
Those got pigeon toes he tells 'em
"Best put some bird food in them shoes!"

Slew foot Stu, struttin' down the hall
Like a duck, with turned out feet
Like Chaplin in a silent flick
All with a boogie woogie beat

Amos Carter - Be Happier With The Money!

This is Amos Carter's 3rd song for Big And Tall Records and he doesn't seem to be slowing down any. He works in the mornings at Delmar Gentry's horse ranch, then works on writing songs for the goup, individual practicing, and rehearsal with the group. Amos found a piano player for the group as Delmar has no interest in performing regularly on the weekends and holidays. Harold 'Spike' McGeffin is the new keyboard player, and he makes his recording debut on this song.

Delmar still produces their recordings at his personal recording studio he installed at his ranch. We're planning a trip to Flagstaff this year so we can have a look at it. He's spent a lot of money for a state of the art studio that has produced some very good quality recordings. We think this song is just Amos' take on something we've heard before about fame and fortune: You can have the fame, I'll take the fortune!

When my band was playing a gig
An older couple came up to me
"Yer that guy that's named Amos!
You know Marge, the one that ain't famous!"

The guy held his drink, took a swig
As the woman told him, "Listen Fred!
You ain't famous either, ya old prospector!
Only place your famous is with the tax collector!"

So quit yer horsin' round dude!
How come yer bein' so rude!
Ain't even funny, you have the fame honey!
I'll be happier with the money!

I kept my eye on 'em all night
 Seemed they always was squabblin'
Maybe they just like to fight
It feels good to them to be arguin'

So quit yer horsin' round dude!
How come yer bein' so rude!
Ain't even funny, you have the fame honey!
I'll be happier with the money!

When it was gettin' close to last call
We always played somethin' easy
If anybody wanted to dance one time
They could move in time real easy.

This older couple got on the floor
It was a sight not to be missed
They were hangin' on each other real tight
And then they kissed, and kissed, AND KISSED!

So they just quit horsin' round dude!
Were never really bein' so rude!
Look like they been together, just this side of forever
But I'd still be happier with the money!

Amos Carter - Ain't Never Gonna Be Famous

Another song from Amos Carter, ranch hand and leader of a band after hours. He works for Delmar Gentry on the horse ranch, and Delmar has been helping him write some songs as Amos' band is rehearsing, getting ready to play some gigs. They want some original material to play as well as the cover songs they do. We don't know for sure who does the writing of what with the songs. All Delmar tells us is that they work together. But if we'd have to guess, we'd say Delmar mostly does the music at least. He's got the formal training in it. Not that Amos is a slouch. He's been playing bass fiddle for many years, and grew up playing the cello.

Amos plunks out a steady bass, and Delmar plays some really good Honky Tonk piano. He told us he had to practice a lot to get the style down pat, as he never played much of it before. He got an old upright piano for the studio, as it just didn't sound right on a Steinway Grand.

If I had to choose what I like,
Music would be first of course
The second thing I like after that
Would havin' my ass sittin' on a horse!

Critters I can sure relate to
They sure can be a lot of work
They're a part of my life
Somethin' that I never shirk

Told ya that my name is Amos
 Ain't never gonna be famous
The band, and a ranch hand
A good life in this great land

My Boss is a horse man as well
He's a horse man that's true blue
He even helps to muck out the barn
Don't quit 'til it's all through
He dresses in blue jeans

Round his neck is a bandana
But he ain't just a horse man, no
He can shore stomp the piana!

Told ya that my name is Amos
Ain't never gonna be famous
The band, and a ranch hand
A good life in this great land

 The skies over Flagstaff,
Are a wonderful back drop
Takin' a long horse ride
Makes ya wanna never stop

Mountains and trees,
Trails goin' through the scene
Horses like it too it seems
Keeps us all healthy and lean

Told ya that my name is Amos
Ain't never gonna be famous
The band, and a ranch hand
A good life in this great land

Amos Carter - My Name Is Amos

Amos Carter
Amos Carter along with Marie Flores is one of the persons Delmar Gentry inherited with the horse ranch he bought in Flagstaff, AZ. Amos has been playing the double bass for many years, and has played on some of Delmar's recordings. Delmar found out that he not only could play, but that he had a band a few years ago  that played in the area. They played Country/Western, Rockabilly, Boogie Woogie, and about any other style people wanted for about ten years. It was three years ago when the band broke up, not due to any drama, but to the changes in some of the band members lives. Plus, playing on the weekends (as they all had full time jobs) in venues up to 200 miles away was getting them pretty tired.

Delmar kept urging Amos to make a recording, as he knew the group wrote a song they always opened their shows with, My Name Is Amos, but Amos wanted to help Marie with her recording first. Shortly after that was done, Amos rounded up what was available of the old group and they filled out the rest from musicians Delmar knew. The three original members are Amos on double bass, lead guitarist Henry Dodson, and pianist Bart Velmer. The song had been written about ten years ago, when Amos was working for the ranch's previous owner. The horse ranch was in the business of raising the animals for sale, and Amos decided  to keep the lyrics the same. The song is a hybrid of Boogie Woogie and country. Delmar produced and recorded this song at his Flagstaff studio as well.

Amos has some Hispanic heritage on his mother's side, and has been active in the Latino music scene off and on since his band quit performing. So now Delmar's trying to get Marie, Amos, and maybe himself, to do some songs.

By day I'm a ranch hand
By night I got a Boogie Woogie band.
I play the double bass,
I make a funny face,
I'll play all over the land

Ya know my name is Amos
Nobody round here can tame us!
 Play the Boogie here,
The Boogie there,
Play Boogie Woogie everywhere!

By day I clean up horse crap
Afterwards I take a big nap
By night I get cleaned up
Get the band cranked up,
Then we make the feet tap

Ya know my name is Amos
Nobody round here can tame us!
 Play the Boogie here,
The Boogie there,
Play Boogie Woogie everywhere!

By day I get dirty and smelly
Clean up the horses, brush their belly
When evenin' comes 'round
That's the time for some sound,
got no time to just watch the telly!

Ya know my name is Amos
Nobody round here can tame us!
Play the Boogie here,
The Boogie there,
Play Boogie Woogie everywhere!

All the horses are doing well!
Gettin' a couple ready to sell
Don't need all we've got
So we'll sell them at the lot
They're good horses, do tell!

Ya know my name is Amos
Nobody round here can tame us!
 Play the Boogie here,
The Boogie there,
Play Boogie Woogie everywhere!
