Toothless Mabel - Get Up Off My Ass!
She's having an issue with an infection in her left hand, so she couldn't play her usual blues guitar, so we sent out the word and Goggle Eyes Brown brought along two of his Oglers on drums and bass while he played the piano. So this is a little bit different sound for her this time around.

Toothless Mabel - Back In The Ditch
When a person has physical trauma in their life, the remnants of physical healing often times remain. But that doesn't mean the physical healing is complete, and it sure doesn't mean the emotional scars have even appeared yet. Emotional and mental healing can take a lot longer and are tied into the physical healing process. Mabel Hicastle has had more than her share of physical and emotional trauma since her cancer diagnosis last year. The cancer was in her leg, and she went through successful surgery and treatment which resulted in the loss of all her teeth due to gum disease. She has since had recurring issues with small tumors showing up in the same leg and foot, and once again had to go through surgery to excise a tumor on her foot. Luckily her leg has shown no further evidence of cancer, but the concern remains that she may lose her foot altogether.
This new song is a reflection of the mental issues she's dealing with, mainly the loss of her job as an RN. She definitely will never return to here former position in a hospital, and even more than the cancer is her sorrow at losing the calling of her life. And it seems every time she's back on the mend, something else pops up. So it's no wonder she's going through so much emotional and mental anguish.
We at Big And Tall Records give her all the encouragement and support we can. She's got an open invitation to bring any songs or recording projects to us for production. She has more than one talent. Her talent and compassion for taking care of people is evident, and we hope her obvious musical talent and artistry will help carry her through all the tough times he's had and continues to have.

Toothless Mabel - Feelin' Sorry For Myself
She has told us she needs to keep busy regardless of her disability, and is looking into any possibilities she may have to utilize her training as a nurse in some capacity. And she's conveyed her desire to increase her recording activity, and we here at Big And Tall Records encourage her to continue as she is able! She's a fine voice in the blues community that brings a woman's viewpoint to a genre that can be male dominated.

Toothless Mabel - Eat At The Y
In the meantime, she was really getting the blues having to sit at home recuperating, so Big Marv, our resident recording producer (and crazy good piano player with his own group The Hodads)got wind of her plight. He talked her into coming into the studio to record. She showed u pin a wheelchair with as brace on her leg. She had a song all ready, Big Marv gave his band some direction and they were ready. Mabel insisted on standing up to play and sing, and got through 6 takes until she got the one she wanted. And as can be heard on the recording, she was in fine voice.
Big Marv has taken a liking to the blues singers here at Big And Tall Records, and offers up himself and his band for backup and any other help they may need. He can be heard on Tugboat Jackson's latest recordings as well.
Mabel offers up a song about how her man takes care of her with a special action. Sounds like those two not only have a good, loving relationship, but have a lot of fun as well!

Toothless Mabel - The Slobber Blues
We're proud to have a remarkable woman such as Mabel Hicastle as one of our artists! She's a strong song writing talent, as well as a great performer. She was a RN working in a hospital until she had a bout with cancer in her left leg. She came out the other side of the cancer very well, but the chemotherapy caused a side effect of gum disease that cost all of her teeth! Not the best thing to happen to a woman in her early 40's, but she's made the most of it with her 'store bought' teeth, and her resultant skills garnered from her tooth loss. She sings of her tooth loss without embarrassment as well in her aptly named blues song.
She is getting ready to go back to work after a hiatus to deal with cancer and recovery, so we don't know when she'll be back for more of her bluesy guitar playing and singing. By the way, she says in the song that she isn't as pretty as she used to be...well, she still looks mighty nice to us!
