An ongoing subject for Tugboat Jackson is Greed, which is also the title of his new song. As is usually the case, the best person to talk about the music is the composer/artist himself:
Might seem like I'm bein' a broken record about this subject, but I think it's an ever increasing problem. I'm not talking about somebody who wants to make enough to have a decent monetary cushion. I did it for years in my hardware business. You make it while ya can, because you don't know when lean times are coming. But there's got to be a limit! When you make decent money and pay your taxes, it shouldn't be looked upon as a negative if you think other people that do the same pay their share as well. Too much emphasis, in my opinion, is tax relief for people who don't need it. There's getting to be more and more folks at the lower end of the economic scale that don't pay any taxes, only for the reason that they don't make enough. Many of these folks depend on government programs to just exist, and there's a great push to cut or even eliminate these 'entitlement' programs. The whole idea of calling them entitlement programs sticks in my craw! Are people 'entitled' to live? Are people 'entitled' to receive benefits from programs they paid in to?
The idea of 'Social Darwinism' still wrongly applies, and it is unfair and rewards those who are born into a higher position of society to the detriment of those at the bottom who are only there because they are 'inferior'! If this is what America is eroding to, then it's not the America I believe in! So if that's my broken record, I'm guilty as charged!
We can't add anything to that! Have a listen:
Always hear 'bout the four letter words
That are obscene and shouldn't be used
I can think of some words a bit longer
That cause a hell of a lot more abuse
Take a five letter word like greed
Maybe the worst thing on this earth
Takes hearts and turns them ice cold
Changes it all in what they think you're worth
If you don't have 'nough money, your cannon fodder
If you don't have billions and billions
You're only worth is to be slaughtered
Along with the rest of the millions
Power is a five letter word too
But taken in its negative sense
That is brought about by greed for it
To covet it there's no defense
There's no amount of greed that's healthy
If you want way more than you need
Goes especially for the real wealthy
For it can turn into evil's seed
Nothing should be magic about money
Only reason to have it is to live
If you rate your importance by how much you have
It can turn your head and heart to a sieve
The only thing that clogs that sieve
Is more and more of everything
The rest of life flows right through it
If they don't think it's a valuable thing
Ambition goes along with all of it
That too can be good or bad condition
Plenty folks used to call me lazy,
But I just never had that kind of ambition.
If you detect any of this within you
Try to take some action that's bold
Before it takes over your life
And steals a way your self control
