Amos Carter - Charlie Horse

Charlie
We at Big And Tall Records have released some recordings with subjects out of the usual. A band whose hero is a cartoon character, a song about the hazards of eating hot peppers, and a song about atomic farts! Those are just examples, our catalogue has many others. So it isn't really strange that one of our artists would write a song about a goofy horse. Amos Carter's song Charlie Horse is pretty much fact, and he told us, like the examples we gave, he gave but a few of the horse's foibles as examples.

Amos Carter came upon the recording studio at the urging of his ranch boss, Delmar Gentry, who also produces all of his songs to date. Amos has a small Boogie Woogie band that plays locally in the Flagstaff area bars and grills, usually on Saturday night. The band wanted to start doing more of their original songs, so Delmar also helped them get started with that.

One of our associates in the office is a horse man as well, and he attests to how each horse has their own character and personality, and that sometimes they can be really goofy and fun! So hats off to Charlie Horse and all of his quirks, known and unknown!

I've got a horse of my own at the barn
Got him a few years back for a song
Guy that had him sold him really cheap
Told me he was goofy, something really wrong

I bought him anyway and I'm glad I did
He's a laid back guy, kind of funny
End up givin' him the name Charlie
To me, he's worth a lot more money

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

Charlie's good on a trail ride, yes he is
Unless you come across things he hates
One of them things is a puddle
He stands in front of it just waits

You gotta get off and lead him round it
He won't step through it all alone
He's stubborn as a mule about it
Best get off and gently lead him on

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

In hot weather, we hose the horses down
Charlie especially likes the spray
But if you don't let him drink out the hose
He gets grumpy, grumbles, walks away!

If he happens to see an orange peel
He'll act like it's a wolf about to pounce!
He neighs, nickers, raise all holy hell
Take a leap, and down he'll trounce

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

End of the day, he likes a rubdown
From his head down to his rear parts
Ya gotta be careful when ya get there
Cuz the rubdown rubs out all his farts!

He always pays such close attention
But he looks like a blockhead moon calf
With his silly looking horse expression
He lets out a big horse laugh

Charlie follows me 'round like a big dog
Always needs a lot of attention
If he was a dog, he'd be just a mutt
Pedigree has no mighty station

The big crazy fool cracks me up!
I love him so much, he's off the shelf
And the reason that I do...
Is that he reminds me so much of myself!
